Today’s service was truly amazing!! It was one of those Sundays where all the elements work together in perfect accord. First, I was super punctual to church. All dressed and ready before time without any stress or feeling like I was running out of time. Secondly, I sat beside a really warm and amazing lady in church whilst listening to the Vicar deliver a mind-blowing sermon on “Love in Action“. It was such an uplifting service, starting from the hymns, to the solo performances that felt like they were singing right to the core of my soul.Indeed, I left the service richer! Keep clicking for a condensed version of the message I took back from church today and of course a little bit of fashion.

Here goes!

What I wore: Dressing up to church was quite a straight forward exercise. All through the week, I had a hazy idea of what I was going to wear : A Berry coloured dress by Meena, now sold out at Zinkata. I teamed it with Silver Shoes, A brown bag and a cream hat/Fascinator.

The Sermon

The theme for today’s sermon was Love in Action. We started off by going through the following verses in the bible

Romans 12:21:Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

We also read about the rich man and Lazarus which can be found in: Luke 16:19-31

When asked in the book of Mathew which is the greatest commandment in the law, Jesus answered thus:“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

I firmly believe that if we genuinely do as the passage above says, the world would be a much better place. Nigeria to be precise! As citizens of the world, how do we respond to life’s challenges and live our lives on the daily? Are we our brothers keepers? Do we love our neighbours as ourselves? Love is not about verbal affirmations, love is actually by showing it!

“Let us not love in word and tongue, but in deed and truth”, 1 John 3-18

The vicar also went further in saying we should show love not just to our friends and families. We should also repay evil with kindness and love, by loving our enemies and showing love to those that have wronged us in one way or the other. In his words “Overcome evil by genuinely loving others. Showing mercy and a willingness to intervene. The good of the other person must be our focus. It goes beyond the attitude of non-retaliation.Seek to do good to even those that don’t love us. It is Christian living, we are different from the others. Love always pays a price. Jesus is an example of self giving sacrificial love.

I love how 1 John 4:12 very aptly summarises the importance of genuinely loving one another: “No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us”.

John 13:35 “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

In what other way can we model Chirst and put our love in action?  The Vicar outlined 7 ways in which we can put our love in action:

  1. Serve one another
  2. Be patient with one another
  3. Be courteous to one another . Ephesians 4: 32 “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ God forgave you”
  4. Set an example for one anther
  5. Forgive one another
  6. Edify one another. Encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ. Build them up in Christ. Is your example tearing down people or building them up? Speak the truth in Love.
  7. Pray for one another

He also pointed out that we should first start by loving ourselves, because if we don’t, we are incapable of loving someone else. He ended the sermon by urging us to open our hearts to the needs of the people around us. Love is what we do not just what we believe. It is not just talk but committed action.Love is practical and concrete. How do you treat your gateman and stewards or those you are in a position of authority over? What are the needs of the people around you? How do you help??

This week, may we intentionally practice love in action and gradually see our actions inspire others to do the same. Together, we can create a better living for one another.Let us love genuinely and in our deeds!
