Ejiro Amos Tafiri’s collection during the Lagos Fashion and Design Week was super intriguing.. The first thing that struck me was the strong reference to Catholicism and how she was able to mesh religious vibes into main-stream fashion. Please click on the highlighted link to see our review of her show: EJIRO
In the Designer’s words:
“The Collection was inspired by religion: the way Altar boys and Reverend sisters dress in the catholic church, Cathedral stained glasses and the way the light hits them and they reflect different colours… I was careful not to be blasphemous but wanted the religious twist to be recognisable. Religion doesn’t have to be boring .. You don’t have to feel like it’s holding you down…just live and breathe with.. I wanted to demystify the misconceptions of the Catholic church..It’s not rigid, it can be fun. It is part of your everyday life!!!”
She certainly succeeded. Her collection connected deeply with me at the shows and it fused religion and fashion together in a way that passed across a very pleasant message…Nigerian Designers are truly awesome!! They have managed to tie in to the expressions of the people and create looks that totally fuse with our culture, traditions and even our weather!! This I find super refreshing!!
I wore a re-formed Ejiro Amos Tafiri classic from the new collection to the Inaugural Lecture of Professor Fabian Ajogwu (SAN). He spoke on Co-orporate Governance and Company Law: De-coupling ownership from Management in the pursuit of Profits. It was such an insightful lecture and a great gathering of inspiring individuals that have achieved monumental success in their chosen paths. I was truly inspired. The after party was super fun as well!!
I shall explain my outfit choice.. I knew it was a formal event filled with lawyers and etc.. However, I totally felt like going dressed in something that defined my profession and personality.. I also had so many more events running through the evening from this event, and wanted the outfit to transcend from the formal event right through to the evening.. It felt right, I felt awesome in it..and I was absolutely going to wear it..and so I did. “FEARLESSLY”
The outfit is made up of a maxi skirt and a cropped top.. It came with a detachable chasuble with a stylised crucifix beaded with glass beads and sand beads.
