HOW TO EXCEL AS A STYLIST

May 12, 2015 | Fashion

Working in Fashion is a lot of hardwork. Regardless of how passionate you are about the job and your craft..You have to be tenacious and equip yourself with problem solving skills.. For survival in Nigeria in the Arts.. It is possible! We just have to work doubly hard..

One of the facets of my job is styling photo-shoots for individuals, celebrities and also co-operate bodies.. I recently styled a shoot for African Magic, where I had to style 16 people…Male and Female..

After establishing theme/ direction of the shoot and  agreeing on budgets… It is wise to go full on into the job and start “pulling” clothes to fit your theme as soon as you can… “Pulling” in fashion  refers to sourcing/getting pieces from designers and stores for your photo shoot or styling session..Make sure you get all the clothes you need for the shoot in advance..

Proper planning with ample time leads to a more successful shoot and better images.. “Research and pull out all your contact sheets and start searching for the items that perfectly fits your theme and the models/personalities you would be shooting”

List.. List.. Lists..Make lists..VERY IMPORTANT..

Regardless of your relationship with the designer.. and regardless of how tired or stressed out you feel.. “LOOK THE PART“..  Your outfit should inspire confidence in them with regards your skills.. Especially when you are starting out as a stylist..

In this post.. I will quickly run you through what an average “pulling”  day in Lagos looks like..

I had already made prior bookings with the designers.. My first stop was at the Alter Ego Studio in Ikoyi, Lagos.. She is a great design house and I absolutely love their signature prints and fluid silhouettes..

She had a lot of delightful pieces.. : While sourcing..irrespective of how amazing/exciting certain pieces are.. “Keep the theme and purpose of the Photoshoot well in the forefront of your mind“… that way you would have a clear direction and be focused on the right garments..

My next stop was at the Kola Kuddus FLAGSHIP STORE.. They specialise in menswear with a strong African aesthetic. I also really like their accessories line.. really great shoes and super well finished.. All made in Nigeria..

The Ene Maya store is next door to Kola Kuddus and was also a major point of call. They have really nice fascinators, hats and accessories.. ..

.. and off I went to House of Marie.. I particularly love House of Marie’s designs..Apart from her fabulous designs and tie and dye pieces,  It is also a great hunt for really flattering pieces for the not too skinny woman..

The next day.. I set off quite bright and early to the Ella and Gaby store.. They are a luxury fashion brand with really lovely pieces..

Pulling is also more effective when you have someone working with you as well.. An assistant would speed things up .. and  enable you cover more ground (Spread out locations)…

“While at the various locations.. you have to listen to the rules of each house carefully.. Stick clearly to the terms and conditions.. and also communicate very clearly on return dates etc. It is very important”..

Your follow-on actions after the shoot and how you carry on would guarantee what sort of relationship you would form with the label/store/house…

Have a great day all.. and please feel free to send in your questions!!
