Working as an Image Consultant/Stylist can be a rewarding as well as fulfilling career.. As is the case for most careers, some basic rules and principles would help propel you faster in your chosen path..There really isn’t a fail-safe manual; hard work and meticulous planning goes a long way.
Here are a few tips to carry along as you progress in the demanding world of Fashion and Styling.
1. Know your clients Measurements
In my years of working as a stylist.. the question I hear the most with regards a dress for my client is: “Do you have her measurements?”. It is also super NICE when my response is “Yes I have her measurements, she’s a Bust**, Hip** and Waist**… .Knowing your clients exact measurements makes for the perfect fit and seamless styling. Just stating she is a size 14 is not sufficient information, detailed measurements could be the difference between an ordinary styled job and a best dressed list. Learn how to take the measurements yourself.. Once a new client signs up for your services, grab a tape measure and document her proportions in a file!
2. An alternative means of reaching your client.
This article is aimed at helping you excel as a celebrity stylist.. Most celebrities are pretty busy people..with their phones ringing off the hook, meetings galore and so much going on at the same time.. It really is that hectic.. They may not always have access to their phones; it is a very wise move to have an alternative means of reaching them.. Get to know her P.A/Assistant/Domestic Staff and make sure you have their contact phone number.Familiarise yourself with the people around your client and build a great working relationship with them all…that way they can save you from a lot of hairy situations and emergencies..
3. Have a Plan B:
This sounds super obvious..but you would be super shocked at how often the plan B dress ends up being “THE DRESS”.. Having a back-up plan is always a great move and makes for great client relations.. Working always with an alternative in mind is the best way to go!
I cannot stress the importance of this. Being a great stylist is one thing…being a stylist whose words can be counted on is another thing.. In this instance, honesty here is referring to plain ole business transparency.
Another scenario: You go on a personal shopping trip for your client.. and get a dress at a bargain.. She is paying you for personal shopping right?? Then why do you feel the need to hike up the price of the dress!.. Transparency and honesty in business relations would propel you even faster than talent would.
5. Keep it absolutely Confidential
Styling is quite a personal job.. In the course of the job, more likely than not.. You would be privy to some of your clients personal business.
A.Do not discuss it with anyone.. media, family etc
b. Do not discuss Client A with Client B.
c.Do not feel the need to clarify on facts and end up spilling what is not in your place to discuss.
….Keep Mum.. totally mum…
